Barry Brover

I am a results-oriented financial executive (CFO) with deep financial and operational expertise. I was the senior financial executive on the leadership team that grew revenues from $125 million to over $2 billion with significant free cash flow through organic growth and acquisitions.
Ernie Scheidemann
Areas in which I enjoy helping clients:
  • Improving financial performance and increasing cash flow
  • Acquisitions- financial models, diligence through integration
  • Streamlining processes and developing controls
  • Aligning finance and operations
  • Developing Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) improving focus on metrics
  • Board and stakeholder presentations
  • Raising capital
I had over 30 years of experience at Barnes & Noble College Booksellers building the financial infrastructure to support the significant growth in the business. Partnering with the executive leadership team and operations, I developed solutions to problems focused on improving profitability. I led numerous acquisitions including developing financial models, leading diligence, and integration. I led the sale of the company at a strong multiple and the continued integration into a public company.
Some examples of significant initiatives that I have led,
and their benefits to my clients and employers, include:
  • Led sale of Barnes & Noble College Booksellers and later spin-off including:
    • S1, roadshow, and investor presentations.
  • Led financial integration, improved controls, and reporting as part of a public company.
  • Successfully performed diligence, financed and fully integrated acquisitions totaling over $250 million.
  • Established and maintained all banking relationships including negotiating credit lines and raising capital.
  • Developed financial infrastructure and controls to improve profitability. This included centralizing back office processes and support functions and implementing new financial and merchandising/operational systems to lower costs and improve margins.
  • Developed a culture of financial accountability with compensation tied to performance.

Leveraging my deep financial and operational experience, I look forward to partnering with small businesses to improve profitability and cash flow and therefore the value of their business.

I earned my Bachelor of Business Administration (Accounting) at Hofstra University.

Previously, I held executive financial positions at mid-to-large-sized companies including:

  • EVP of Operations, Barnes & Noble Education, Inc.
  • EVP, CFO, Barnes & Noble Education, Inc.
  • VP, CFO, Barnes & Noble Education, Inc.
  • VP, CFO, Barnes & Noble College

Brian Stark, Chief Operating Officer, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers

Barry is one of the most thoughtful, easily approachable, and astute senior managers that I have ever worked with. His openness, candor, and direct honesty was a model that I used for my own leadership qualities. Never judgmental, but always able to use great judgment helped Barry in his critical CFO role where we worked alongside each other for many years. Never hesitate to ask Barry to pursue any type of project regardless of its complexity or difficulty.

Joel Friedman, Founder and Owner, JSF Solutions and Former Vice President General Merchandising, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers

Barry was always my go-to person for everything finance-related. He is a true partner with Human Resources, taking the time to provide guidance and support. His knowledge, tenacity, and humor are one of a kind!

JoAnn Magill, Former SVP Human Resources, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers

Barry Brover has been a colleague of mine for over 30 years. When Barry joined Barnes & Noble College, we were a very small private company with annual revenues of approximately $100 million, by the time Barry left we were a public company with over $2 billion in revenues.

From his CFO position and eventually, Executive V.P. Operations, Barry significantly contributed to the growth of the Company through our Comp Store sales increases, as well as acquisitions. Most importantly from our humble beginnings, he was instrumental in putting the accounting and expense infrastructure and policies that were utilized throughout our organization and allowed us to grow both in revenues and most importantly, in profitability.

In my 45 years of work experience, he is one of the finest individuals I’ve ever had the experience of working with!

Paul Maloney, President of Oak Hall Cap & Gown Company and Former VP Store Operations, B&N College

Barry possesses unique skills; not only was he an exceptional CFO with financial, operational, and market communications acumen, but he was also my significant partner in running a two billion-plus company. Barry always delivers results beyond expectations with no project or issue being too large or small. Barry was and remains my trusted advisor.
