Dan Schlimm

I have over 25 years of experience in accounting, leadership and consulting with public and privately held companies in the Tampa Bay region ranging in size from $20m to $2B. My work extends across a range of industries with a special focus on global manufacturers and distributors of complex capital equipment and medical devices.

My overall goal with the companies I work with is to help business owners and management teams meet their most urgent needs. Most often than not, that takes me outside the typical accounting, finance and compliance roles many CFOs spend the bulk of their time on and into the operational strategies of the business. This approach, coupled by my past experiences, allows me to develop a comprehensive understanding of a company’s value, profitability, strengths, risks, opportunities, constraints and potential, which can be translated into strategies and tactics that improve performance.

My approach to every engagement is to bring a sense of urgency while respecting the unique values of the shareholders, customers, vendors and employees. From a personal perspective, I value persistence, logic, humor, discretion, transparency, accomplishment and last, but not least, honesty. As a senior-level financial executive (CFO/VP), I’ve been fortunate to have worked with multiple companies who are industry leaders. This exposure has provided valuable insight into best practices that will hopefully find a place in your organization.
Some of my past achievements and responsibilities have included:
  • The financial and sales planning for a $2B publicly held equipment manufacturer and distributor with 30+ factories, 15+ separate business units and 4,000 employees
  • The successful turnaround of a $50M privately held international manufacturer and distributor, including substantial organizational and infrastructure improvements, replacing key management, implementing new ERP systems and negotiating new credit facilities
  • The successful turnaround of a $40M privately held food processor, including divesting of non-performing assets, restructuring operations, reducing costs and managing bank relationships.
  • The successful reorganization of 6 portfolio companies representing $800M in sales, 20+ 3rd party sales rep groups and 150+ sales reps
  • The valuation, sale and/or purchase of multiple businesses with sales from $1 to $20 million
  • The evaluation, selection and implementation of multiple ERP systems and complex IT development projects

I am currently assisting clients on an interim basis only in the Tampa Bay region with a preference for the following niches:

  • Manufacturing and distribution companies ranging in size from $20m to $200m
  • Medical devices, consumer products segments
  • Companies engaged in turnarounds, mergers, acquisitions or divestitures

  • Partner/Founder of small cap M&A advisory firm for companies with valuations from $1m-$20M
  • Interim CFO for $130M global manufacturer
  • CFO of $50 subsidiary of Consumer Products medical device company

Dan worked for me for approximately six months as interim VP of Finance. During that time our company had a major problem with inventory control - both physically and financially. He did a great job in putting together action plans to fix our issues. Additionally, he put together a number of controls to improve our financial performance. His knowledge and work ethic were excellent. We tried to get him to permanently assume the position but due to family situations he declined.

I worked with Dan at following his tenure as the interim CFO/VP Finance. He was instrumental in returning the entity to an acceptable level of control and restoring confidence with the corporate parent. Dan also developed some the key metrics methodologies, and generally improved the subsidiaries reporting regimen.
